EUROPEAN BEE-EATER ACCUSED OF ESPIONAGE

300x100 - NOOK Tabletâ„¢ 8GBHaving an interest in birds since the age of 6, I plead that we leave our avian friends out of the complex issues involved in international espionage... please? Birds have become so much a part of my life that it makes me mad as a wet hen when they're wrongly accused of things. A recent AFIO WIN article ruffled my feathers- the Turkish Intelligence Services accused the European Bee-Eater bird of being a 007 spy.

How much crow can one eat? Being a bird lover, I was initially upset, but I eventually thought the incident amounted to mere chicken feed. I make frequent contacts with various professional ornithologists, including one who is retired from his senior researcher position at the Smithsonian Institution. I visit them often in NW Pennsylvania, and observe them attach GPS geo-locators on purple martins and other bird species, to track their migratory patterns. The purple martins annually migrate to Brazil and back and many have geo-locator attached to them.

Thank goodness purple martins don't fly over Turkey, less they be shot out of the sky with anti-aircraft fire! How chicken-livered can one be? Is Israel's Mossad training them to fly into jet aircraft engines?

Actually, I was quite amused at this bird-brained espionage claim leveled at Israel for creating a spy bird out of the  European Bee-Eater. A little bird told me [AFIO's WIN] that Turkish authorities believe the dead bird found by a Turkish farmer in a field may have been conducting covert surveillance for Israel. I guess they thought it was getting a "bird's eye" view of their country. Yes, a European Bee-Eater was discovered by the Turkish farmer wearing a band on its leg with the word "Israel" written on it. This "crazy as a loon" claim is ironic, for my ornithology buddies in NW Pa. also tag their GPS geo-locators with identification tags.

Turkish Intel wears an albatross around its neck, for it is far from being as wise as an owl when connecting the espionage dots. It was duck soup to them...just look at the evidence! The bird had "unusually large nostrils," leading to their speculation that it was implanted with a surveillance device and sent to Turkey on an aerial espionage mission. The bird's remains were handed over to the Turkish Agriculture Ministry, which then turned them over to Ankara's security services. What a wild goose chase!

News of the feathered arrest spread to Israel, where the Society of Protection of Nature was eventually alerted. The group confirmed that the bird was banded about four years ago for research purposes.

Turkish authorities apparently count their chickens before they hatch in such "chicken and egg" situations. They should be professionals and analyze incoming-intelligence with methodical expertise...not like bird b,rains! "They can rest easy...it's not a spy", said Yoav Pearlman of the Israeli Birdwatching Center to Ynet News on Tuesday. The bizarre development follows a series of weird espionage allegations leveled at Israel by Iran, Egypt and Saudi Arabia in recent years
... birds of a feather, do indeed, flock together. Can't the IC take them under their wings and teach them the intelligence analysis process...so they quit winging it all the time?!

Saudi Arabia appeared as silly as a goose when it announced in January 2011 that it "detained" a bird wearing an Israeli identification band. The bird was carrying a GPS transmitter from Tel Aviv University. OSINT News would like to thank Saudi Arabia for aiding Israeli ornithologists in their scientific quest to better understand the migratory patterns of our avian friends. At least the Tel Aviv University researchers gained some tracking information on the migratory habits of the particular species they were studying, even though it was labeled a "Zionist espionage plot". What a conclusion based on evidence as scarce as hen's teeth...was Saudi Arabian intelligence trying to kill two birds with one stone?

Even Iran laid an egg when they accused Israel of enlisting pigeons to spy on their nuclear sites. Were these 007 pigeons conducting some sort of “coo”? Will all the pigeons perching and relieving themselves atop the hundreds of statues of Iranian leaders be shot for "defacing and disrespecting" the mullahs? I hope these allegations are only a swan song.

The chickens are coming home to roost! Turkey's intelligence service used Israel's ornithology research project to feather its own nest. I'm proud as a peacock that this incident upsets the global birding community. Their anger won't disappear like water off a duck's back.
Geolocators are placed on all kinds of endangered bird species in many countries.

So, it's time to talk turkey...I plead for you all to get your ducks in a row and keep our avian friends clear of international espionage issues. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, so let's all learn from Turkey's intel egg-in-the-face mistake and not foul our own nests by clipping the wings off the world's ornithology research.

Well, I must go. I am driving to NW Pa. to help researchers study purple martins. It's a good 4-hour drive, even as the crow flies, so I must be off. I feel as free as a bird and as happy as a lark when I visit them.

LOCKERBIE BOMBER DIES IN TRIPOLI

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was the only person convicted for blowing up Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish village of Lockerbie in 1988 killing 270 people. That happened on  December 21, 1988, when PAN AM Flight 103, a Boeing 747-121, on its way from London Heathrow to New York, was blown up over the town of Lockerbie, Scotland. All 259 persons on board of the aircraft and 11 residents of the town of Lockerbie were killed. Before 9/11, It was the deadliest act of air terrorism against Americans, many of whom were passengers. The attack was never fully investigated.

Last year, OSINT News wrote an article Top Secret CIA Documents Released On Lockerbie Bombing and it is quite revealing. On November 14, 1991 the United States and Britain announced criminal charges against two Libyan intelligence officers, the now deceased Abdel Basset Ali Al-Megrahi , and Lamen Khalifa Fhimah. In August of 1998, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi announced that his country would accept the United States and British plan to put the two suspects on trial by a Scottish court convened in the Netherlands. On April 5th, 1999 the two suspects were transported from Libya to the Netherlands. After a 40 week trial, on January 31, 2001, a three judge panel returned a guilty verdict against Abdel Baset Ali Mohamed al-Megrahi. The judges believed that Megrahi was a Libyan intelligence agent of fairly high rank. However, they tossed out much of the prosecution witnesses' evidence as false or questionable regarding Al-Amin Khalifa Fhimah, and acquitted him.

The Libyan Megrahi was sentenced to life imprisonment in Scotland, but in 2009 he applied to be released from jail on "compassionate grounds". His appeal was granted and on the 20th of August 2009 he was released from prison.

OBAMA SUPPLIES SYRIAN REBELS WITH ANTI-TANK MISSILES!

Just in! There has been heavy debate over supplying the Syrian “rebels”; I.e., Freedom Fighters, with arms. President Obama has given the go-ahead, and sophisticated anti-tank missiles will be sent to them. In fact, according to one OSINT News source, Syrian rebels have received their first “third generation” anti-tank weapons, the 9K115-2 Metis-M and Kornet E. They are supplied by Saudi and Qatari intelligence agencies following a secret message from President Barack Obama approving the raising of the military stake in the effort to oust Assad. It is hoped the blazing tanks will undermine morale in the army and the Assad regime will delay the movement of armored units between flash point scenes. Ankara was also advised to start providing Syrian rebels with IEDs for roadside bombing of government vehicles. Assad’s Russian and Iranian military and intelligence advisers are warning him that a protracted guerrilla war is in the making, for which the Syrian army is ill-prepared.

President Obama is "walking the talk" by putting his threats into reality. Earlier this month, President Obama told the Atlantic Weekly, “It is our estimation that Assad’s days are numbered – it’s a matter not of if, but when.” Then, this week, President Obama told a members at the weekend’s G-8 Summit at Camp David, Maryland that "Bashar al-Assad must leave power".

There has been a rash of Syria's T-72 tanks being blown to pieces. It is suspected the Syrian freedom fighters already possess the anti-tank missiles, have been trained in their usage, and are responsible for the recent T-72 batterings.
Note: Are you in favor of the U.S. supplying the Syrian rebels with anti-tank missiles? Please take the POLL in the upper right margin.

SECRETS TO FRIGHTENINGLY POWERFUL RUSSIAN MISSILE STOLEN

The question is, who stole the secrets and how did they do it? According to the Moscow Times, An employee of a "closed" project in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg has been accused of leaking secrets about the intercontinental Bulava missile. This was just reported yesterday. A Sverdlovsk regional court held proceedings against the employee, who is accused of transferring classified information to foreign intelligence relating to the guidance and control systems of the submarine-launched Bulava, according to Soviet law enforcement replies to a Moscow Times inquiry.

Experts in the Urals military-industrial complex said the employee was likely part of the research and production association Automatic, whose experts are directly involved in launching rockets and designing their management systems.

"The evidence proving his guilt is sufficient, though the details of the affair are not being revealed yet because they include state secrets," a law enforcement source said. "What exactly was passed and to which government is so far also not yet released."

This missile is so secretive that the entire court proceedings will be hush-hush and held behind closed doors. The U.S. does know that the Bulava (SS-NX-30) SLBM, developed by the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology (since 1998), is 12-meters long, weighs 36.8 tons (good grief!), carries six to 10 nuclear warheads (MIRV’s), and has a range of over 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles). The three-stage ballistic missile is designed for deployment on Borey-class nuclear submarines. Moscow planned to make the Bulava the cornerstone of its nuclear arsenal.

Incidentally, upon detonation over a target, the Bulava’s atomic blast is 100 times the strength of the atomic explosion that devastated Hiroshima in 1945. Thus far, the missile's development has been plagued by failed launches, with only 10 of its 18 tests considered successful.

It is is an awesome and incredibly frightening weapon! OSINT News found the complete and detailed Timeline of a Bulava Missile Launch during each of its 3-stages in another Russian newspaper...quite eye-opening!

Ironically, although the espionage event came out yesterday, Yuriy Solomonov, the Director and Chief Designer of the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology, authored a book about the missile. Solomonov resigned in 2009 after the 11th test failure of the Bulava missile...that he designed! A brilliant man, he previously worked on the Topol-M missile system and has published over 300 scientific works and has over 200 inventions.

Maybe it's time America revisits the Star Wars concept begun during the Reagan years. Last year, we wrote a piece called, WILL IRAN'S NUCLEAR BOMB RENEW STAR WARS?  Perhaps even if Iran doesn't develop nuclear weaponry, we should rething Star Wars...with gusto.

NEED INFO ON FEMALE CIA SPIES

OSINT News is helping Washington Post journalist Ian Shapira obtain information about two former CIA colleagues: Barbara Robbins and Grace Joyce. He's writing a major story on the dedication and bravery of female CIA officers.
Specifically, Shapira is finishing up a piece on Barbara A. Robbins, the first female CIA employee killed in action. She died when a car bomb exploded outside the US Embassy in Saigon in March 1965. Shapira is looking for one of her good friends, Grace Joyce, also an employee, perhaps a secretary, at the Agency. Any and all leads about Grace or Barbara are welcome. If you know anything about these two women, please contact OSINT News on the secure Bpath Mail Form and we will forward the information to Ian Shapira. Or, if you desire to contact him directly, here is his email and phone number at the Washington Post: shapirai@washpost.com and phone number is 202-334-7572.

If you want to learn more about women in the CIA, Lindsay Moran is the person to know! She is now in her early 40's, but was a former CIA clandestine officer. Now, she is a freelance writer and has published articles in The New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today. We offer you her book, "Blowing My Cover, My Life As A Spy" which she published in 2005.
And, of course, we must not forget about Valerie Plame (Wilson), a female NOC who was exposed during the Bush administration. OSINT News wrote an article about this treasonous incident: White House Leak Made All Americans "Fair Game". I've stared at the names on the memorial for fallen CIA agents inside CIA HQ and wondered how many names are not listed, due to the deep cover operations they were operating in. Let's also remember Elizabeth Hanson, who was killed in 2009 in Afghanistan by an asset they thought they flipped onto the CIA's side:

AL QAEDA TOUGHENING, NOT ON "PATH TO DEFEAT"

Seth Jones, a former Special Ops Command senior advisor, does not believe al Qaeda is on the “path to defeat” as President Obama recently announced. After analyzing thousands of pages of court transcripts, including wiretapped conversations and communications intelligence intercepts, he reached the conclusion that al Qaeda has been transformed, but not defeated.

Jones speaks of three waves of al Qaeda terrorism. Wave 1 began in 1998 with the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya and climaxed with 9/11; wave 2 began with the invasion of Iraq in 2003, when al Qaeda increased its suicide attacks, established itself there (currently remains there), and spread elsewhere to Bali, Casablanca, Madrid, and London (subway bombing); and wave 3 began in 2008 with its solid sanctuary in Yemen. In the article CIA Ramps Up Operations in Yemen, eight reasons are given as to why I feel we will show a light-footed, but deadly presence there.

Order online
Interestingly, Jones correlates these groundswells of al Qaeda activity with deployment of large numbers of U.S. and coalition troops to Muslim countries. Michael Scheur, ex-head of the CIA’s bin laden unit, wrote about this trend in his book “Imperial Hubris”. Seth Jones also found, through his extensive research, that these waves wane when such massive “foreign” troops are transfigured with light-footed, clandestine operations. It’s also difficult for al Qaeda to establish a foothold and gain traction when it kills large numbers of civilians and when its targeted country develops capable security forces. Jones believes that the side that kills the most civilians loses.

I also believe this light-footed approach will be the mainstay stratagem, from now on, in our global battle with al Qaeda, Inc. America has learned to fight the shadow war where insurgent weaklings can beat superpower giants. It's called asymmetric warfare. And, Yemen is an audition, a test case. Not long ago, behind closed doors with Yemeni officials, a harmonious decision was made to send in military advisers, surveillance satellites and drone aircraft, undercover CIA and DOD intelligence-gathering agents, and small special ops teams for surgical strikes against AQAP. News media reporters will most likely NOT be embedded in these clandestine operations, and subterfuge, ruse, trickery and wile will replace main battlefield soldiers, which radical Islam has successfully spread thin around the globe at great financial expense to America and its allies. In asymmetric warfare, whoever believes a super power can't become lop-sided is dead wrong. From now on, undercover CIA and DOD intelligence officers, stealthy raids by small special ops teams, Yemeni-approved U.S. air force support, secretive predator and reaper drone patrols, and supplying Yemeni troops with weaponry and training will replace massive armored Marine divisions.

And, this innovative strategy will spread throughout the world, wherever al Qaeda established itself.

EX-BULGARIAN SPIES GET BURN NOTICES

OSINT News believes the fast-paced political happenings  occurring in Bulgaria parallel the pressures on her to navigate through a post-Communistic landscape. She must reform her government, its spy services, and international identity in the wake of the fall of the Soviet Union. Simultaneously, NATO and the EU yearn to absorb Bulgaria into their respective organizations as well. This brings up many questions. How involved is the CIA and the American Intelligence Community (IC) in reshaping Bulgarian affairs? How involved is the American IC in penetrating Russia's intelligence services via Bulgarian assets? What will be Bulgaria’s foreign policy and diplomacy towards the U.S. and Europe? How intertwined is Bulgaria’s intelligence service with that of the Soviet’s?

Bulgaria's ex intelligence chief Gen. Kircho Kirov has been fired by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. Kirov was dismissed as head of the National Intelligence Service, then appointed as an adviser to the Prime Minister. Kirov had been the head of the Bulgarian intelligence for the past 9 years and was dismissed in January 2012 along with his deputy Gen. Angelov.
Click to learn more!
At that time, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov explained that Gen. Kircho Kirov, the outgoing head of the Bulgarian intelligence, would not be appointed as an ambassador because of his record of collaboration with the former State Security, the secret service of the Bulgarian communist regime (DS), but that he would be offered an adviser post at PM's office.

Now, Kirov's adviser position dismissal by Borisov was executed without any reason given; however, unconfirmed reports support the contention that Kirov's firing was the result of violations during his work as chief of Bulgaria's National Intelligence Service.

According to opposition whistle blower MP Yane Yanev, Kirov is said to have uncovered serious violations by ex President Georgi Parvanov and ex Vice President Angel Marinov that connect them to a corruption ring for the granting of Bulgarian citizenship. And, lots of money was involved. Bulgaria's Prosecutor's Office is standing by.

In the meantime, Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov confirmed that Gen. Kirov will not be appointed Ambassador,   dismissng such an appointment from happening to a former head of the communist-era State Security (DS). Kirov said in an interview for the newspaper Presa Daily that "I thank him for his remarks, which were at times critical. I could not comment on the situation which arose after the Prime Minister shared his views about my future. It will be a decision of Prime Minister Borisov and Minister Mladenov. I interpret his reaction in broader terms."

Interestingly, IS chief Gen. Kircho Kirov received a negative mention in a Wikileaks cable dated January 25, 2007 sent by U.S. Ambassador John Beyrle, which was published in Bulgaria October 26th. It is reported that Borisov, indeed,  desired to make Kirov an Ambassador. What was his motivations for wanting to do so? After all, Borisov vowed to remove all Ambassadors with DS records. Could it be that Kirov knows intelligence that could harm Borisov's reputation?

According to foreign newspaper reports that OSINT News obtained, the new GERB government in Bulgaria is coming down hard on the former DS. A new nomination package for new Ambassadors will be approved after President-Elect Rosen Plevneliev assumes office. Plevneliev won the end-of-October presidential elections on the ticket of GERB, and vowed to sign the recall papers of the diplomats with proven ties to DS on his first day in office. According to one
Bulgarian newspaper, the GERB Cabinet will have to appoint over 50 new Ambassadors to replace the ones recalled over their ties to DS and those whose terms in office expire.

OSINT News is pleased with the results and welcomes the DS members receiving their "burn notices" (CIA term). The DS accumulated secret files that have caused the new, democratic Bulgaria, much controversy. This new regime, which swept in after the communist regime collapsed, charge the former DS and communist elite of stealing all DS files that could become harmful to its members and supporters, including the older members who are currently working diplomatic posts around the world. OSINT News wonders how many of the "DS-friendly" could be working assets for the Russian intelligence services?

A decade ago, former Interior Minister Gen. Atanas Semerdzhiev was arrested and convicted of razing 144,235 DS files from the Durzhavna Sigurnost archives. OSINT News supports the new, democratic Bulgarian regime in its efforts to "burn" all former DS agents and to expel them from its diplomatic corp...and that's just for starters.
Learn about bacterial toxins!
Ruthless, indeed, they were. We offer a fine resource about how they operated. The Bulgarian umbrella is the name of an umbrella with a hidden pneumatic mechanism which shot out a small poisonous pellet containing ricin. The Bulgarian Umbrella has a hollow stalk which the pellet neatly fits into.
Such an umbrella was allegedly used in the assassination of the Bulgarian dissident writer Georgi Markov on September 7, 1978 (the birthday of the Bulgarian State Council Chairman
Todor Zhivkov who had often been the target of Georgi Markov's criticism). Markov's murder occurred on the Waterloo Bridge in London (Markov died four days later). The
murder weapon was also used in the failed assassination attempt against the Bulgarian dissident journalist Vladimir Kostov the same year in the Paris Metro. The poison used in both cases was ricin and the murders were undoubtedly carried out by the Bulgarian Secret Service (DS) during the Cold War years, with the assistance of the KGB. These two murders inspired the 1980 French film Le Coup du parapluie (The Umbrella Coup)
